Frequently asked questions

Single time and place?

Examples of this question: "When you say a single time and place, is Italy close enough?"
Yes, Italy is close enough. Mostly I want you to decide a plausible time and place, and tell us why. For some people that will be "Florence" and for others it will be "Northern Italy". "Western Europe" might be too big for later period stuff, but perfectly OK for the High Middle Ages, etc

Fabric substitution?

There's been a few questions on this one, so it seems I could have been clearer. At the moment the rules talk about making substitutions for late period difficult to acquire fabrics (mostly as that's the area that I know about). It's now being extended to all fabrics.

Getting the right fabric can often be a challenge, with the choice coming down to a trade-off between fabric content, weave and budget. If you are going to use a substitute, try and choose one that has the same weight and drape as the original for the best result. In other words, make sure your synthetic or cotton brocades, or your wool blends behave like the original fabric you are trying to mimic.

Transferable items? (capsule wardrobe rules)

Honestly it's up to you. Tell us what you've chosen as your transferable items. Some examples might be shirts/smocks, stockings, shoes, belts, aprons, jewellery, hats.
